Chapter Six

The slush in Flex’s veins turned to molten lava. This man had given him a start when he’d been a lost seventeen-year-old. Sanchez had picked him up hitching along Highway 64 through the Carson National Forest. He took Flex under his wing, taught him how to rope and ride, made him part of hard-working team that ran the Sanchez ranch like clockwork.

And then he’d killed his best friend and lover.

“You bastard. You killed my best friend.”

“I killed a nobody! He was nothing compared to the future of this ranch and my daughter.”

Holding tight to his sanity, Flex stood up and walked out of Sanchez’s office.

“Where are you going, you ungrateful whelp!”

Flex kept walking. He went down the hallway and turned right into the dining room. Crossing that room, he turned into the main hall that led to the front door. That was where he encountered Marina.

The girl had blue-black hair and light blue eyes. She was short, maybe five foot three inches, well below his own five foot eleven. She looked at him and smiled. But she looked stricken when her father started raving from his office again. She hesitated but eventually chose to tend to her father.

Flex wondered what she knew about her father. Whether she knew if he’d handpicked a husband for her. He wondered if the old man had even pointed him out to her when she was out on the ranch.

He’d never seen her out and about on the ranch. He’d seen her from a distance, but she hadn’t been on foot or horseback. A large, heavily fortified white Suburban ferried her on and off the ranch. Flex didn’t think she was even fifteen years old yet.

But no matter what, he was getting off this ranch. He’d pack his few belongings, get his dog, load them into his rattletrap truck, and take off. He’d leave Sanchez and his daughter far behind.

Flex left before he did something he couldn’t take back. Little did he know he’d soon be pulled back by the bastard’s underhanded manipulation of the town sheriff.

Flex’s plan was to stay on at Tillman long enough to get one paycheck then head back to the Sanchez ranch. To get his dog back, get his stuff back, and face Sanchez one last time. But if Sanchez was here, in Ferro County, he’d have to face Sanchez in town. He still didn’t know what he was going to do or say when he saw him, but he knew it had to be done.

“Hey, Flex.” Drake rode up. “I’ll take tonight. Each of you guys can take a night each so we all get at least two night’s sleep.”

“You sure you want to do a whole night? You sure you’ll stay awake?”

“I never said anything about staying awake, but I have excellent balance.”

“Saddle naps.”

“Yup. So you go on. Eamon’s back at the campsite.” A frown marred Drake’s face. “He’s looking for something, but he won’t say what.”

Flex grinned. He had a damn good idea what Eamon was looking for.
